Vasse Bypass Dual Carriageway Construction

Project Overview

Leeuwin Civil was engaged to construct the new dual lane bypass to divert regional traffic around the Vasse town site development. The new bypass was specifically constructed to enable a future upgrade to four lanes and has improved safety and amenity for the area by removing large volumes of traffic from the town. This $12.8 million project was completed on time and opened by the then Transport Minster, Dean Nalder, on 29 January 2016.

The bypass begins at the intersection of the Busselton Bypass and Bussell Highway, and proceeds west around the nearby Vasse town site development before reconnecting to the existing Bussell Highway, south west of the development.

A key reason for Leeuwin Civil's selection for this project was the company's in-house capability to crush and screen all subbase and basecourse materials required. This provided the client with surety Leeuwin Civil could deliver within the strict program parameters.

Key Project Features

  • Construction of 4 km of new road, including 400 m of dual carriageway.
  • Supply of all subgrade, subbase and basecourse for the 4km of new road and 400m of dual carriageway.
  • Reconstruction of the sections of the old highway and Vasse Yallingup Road that tie into the new road.
  • Construction of five new intersections with street lighting.
  • Construction of a new 25-m-long concrete bridge over the Buayanyup Drain.
  • Construction of a concrete underpass just east of the drain to facilitate safe movements under the highway for pedestrians and cyclists.

Leeuwin Civil was selected for its ability to provide a complete wet hire package from its extensive fleet of equipment and skilled operators, including scrapers and all-terrain water trucks. Leeuwin Civil also owns and operates a number of bulk material supply pits in the south west region. This availability of material coupled with Leeuwin Civil's in-house crushing, screening and haulage capabilities enabled the timely importation of some 80,000 tonnes of gravel from its gravel pits.
