Eastern Link City of Busselton
Construction of critical new dual carriageways, roundabouts, and a bridge over the Vasse River
Project Overview
Eastern Link created a second entry point into Busselton’s busy city centre by constructing a new dual carriageway road link, which included a bridge across the Vasse River, and roundabout constructions.
Leeuwin Civil constructed Eastern Link under two separated contract stages. Stage One of the works included two roundabout constructions, a single carriageway road, road modifications, a shared path, and road bridge over the Vasse River. Stage Two included further road upgrades to tie-in Stage One works, conversion of the new Eastern Link's Causeway Road and Rosemary Drive roundabout to a dual-lane roundabout, road duplications, additional shared paths, street lighting, pedestrian crossings, and guardrails.
Key Project Features:
Staged programming and complex traffic management was required to enable the flow of traffic (<100,000 vehicles per day during the project works).
Environmental management
Environmental management was carried out under our approved Environmental Management Plan. This included protection of the local Western Ringtail Possum population using spotters and relocation practices, construction of a temporary possum rope across the Vasse River, and permanent possum crossing once the new bridge was constructed. Other key environmental practices included treatment and testing of water, temporary subsoil drainage, use of complex dewatering practices, and careful selection of plant and machinery to reduce noise and vibration.
Cultural heritage
Cultural heritage monitoring was required during excavation of the existing Vasse River embankments.
Leeuwin Civil managed a wide range of subcontractors to fulfill specialised tasks including bridge piling, street lighting installation, asphalting, kerbing and exposed aggregate contractors.
Technical aspects
Bridge construction adopted a simply supported bridge design with twenty concrete piles driven approximately ten metres. It also included two headstocks connected to five T-Roff beams.
The project also imported approximately 20,000 m3 of fill for embankment construction and adopted sensitive urban design principles wherever practicable.
