Bridgetown Waste Facility Expansion Project
Major expansion of the Bridgetown wastewater facility
Project Overview
Leeuwin Civil was engaged by the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes to undertake expansion works at the Bridgetown Waste Removal Facility over two contracted stages.
Stage One - Leachate pond construction
Works comprised removing and stockpiling the initial 400 mm of existing unsuitable material and placement of 10,000 m3 of clay cut to fill material which had to be conditioned, placed, and compacted to construct the dam for the pond. This was then lined with a 5,000 m2 geosynthetic clay liner and then covered with an HDPE liner. The floor of the pond was then cut and trimmed, and an 8,000 m2 geofabric layer placed over it. This was then covered with 300 mm of blue metal ballast, with 180 m of a 160 mm HDPE leachate pipe within the ballast - welded together and connected to the main construction. Geofabric was then wrapped over the ballast to form a sealed "leachate".
The project encountered heavy rains during the month of January, which could have had the potential to affect programming.
Stage Two - Waste and sediment pond construction
Following the leachate pond construction Leeuwin Civil then constructed the anaerobic and facultative wastewater pond. This commenced with bulk earthworks for the pond formations followed by installation of interconnecting pond pipework. A concrete delivery pad was then constructed followed by supply and installation of a GCL and HDPE liner into the trenches. Works were completed with the installation of fencing and gates.
