UNDERGROUND INFRASTRUCTURE INSTALLATIONS

Bore 21 Collector Main Construction

Project Overview

Leeuwin Civil was engaged by the Busselton Water Board to supply and install a one-kilometre-long, 355 mm water main between the Fairway Drive bore site, and the Queen Elizabeth main at the Busselton Water Plant.

Eighty per cent of the project adopted trenchless technology, with open excavation used to complete the remaining twenty per cent of works to enable air and scour valve installations.

As the new collector main’s alignment was adjacent to wetland this created both environmental challenges, and cultural heritage monitoring requirements for the Leeuwin Civil team.

A pipe bridge was also constructed over the Vasse Drain. The bridge was secured using large concrete thrust footings, and special pipe spool pieces were also supplied and installed at pits and connection points.

Extensive dewatering also had to take place in several places to enable the valve installations. Our team also encountered rock, which had to be excavated in several places.

Cultural heritage monitors were also required as part of the site’s route included a site of Aboriginal significance.

Scope of Works:

  • 1 km water main construction
  • Concreting works and final connection to the water main
  • Pipe bridge construction over the Vasse Drain
  • Extensive use of trenchless technology
  • Butt welding and fusion welding
  • Scour and air valve installations.
